Irving Girl Scouts Build Cat Trees for DFW Humane Society
Members of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 5670 of Irving, Texas completed their Engineering Journey by designing, building, and donating three cat trees to the DFW Humane Society on April 20, 2019. The DFW Humane Society was in need of cat trees for their Cat Room so these ambitious animal-loving Girl Scouts rose into action.
The Cadettes who participated were Mia Martinez, Anjali Reitmeyer, Chandani Reitmeyer, Victoria Pena, Alessandra Gonzales, and Arushi Agrawal (as pictured). The project advisors were Sonal Reitmeyer, Michelle Jennings, and Glenn Nicholas.
The girls carefully designed and engineered a multi-tiered cat tree that would be fun for climbing and at the same time be sturdy and portable. The tree has carpeted steps and a cozy bed on the top for their feline friends to enjoy. The girls chose materials that would be easy to wash, wipe, and maintain. As an added bonus, the girls wrapped rope around the posts for the cats to scratch and rub on.
During the process, the girls learned valuable new skills such as carpentry, tool use, and painting. They also enhanced the important life skills of teamwork, problem-solving, and patience. They funded this project by selling Girl Scout cookies and using donated wood and tools from a local playground business, Beyond Back- yards.
Once the cat trees were completed, the girls delivered them to Michael Whiteside, the Administration & Development Coordinator at the DFW Humane Society. The girls were ecstatic to see the cats immediately start climbing up the cat trees, playing, and even scratching the posts.
What a commendable job by these talented Irving Girl Scouts!
