National Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week takes place each year during the first week of November and was created to encourage people to learn more about their local shelters, what they do to help animals and ways that they can help.
DFWHS, a 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter, rescues an average of 900 unwanted and neglected pets each year and provides food, shelter, vaccinations, daily care, and socialization for those animals until they find a forever home. Nationwide, an estimated 6.5 million animals enter shelters each year; plus, many animal owners find themselves in need of the services provided by local shelters, such as pet food assistance programs that can help keep a pet in the home by providing pet food during financial hardships.
In 2018, Virbac Corporation launched The Every Pet Project, formerly “The Every Dog Project,” to make donations to nonprofit animal welfare organizations. Awardees are nominated by veterinary professionals, pet owners, and pet lovers alike. Each month, two randomly-selected organizations receive $2,500 to support them in their valuable work.
Francois Fournier, CEO of Virbac North America, explained the thinking behind the donations: “The Every Pet Project will help us do more for the communities we serve and enable us to improve the quality of care for pets that need it the most.”
